LIFE KI-DO PROMOTIONAL BELT TESTING INFORMATION
Although belt testing is by no means the focus of our training, we do find that it gives our students a sense of value & achievement. Besides offering the students benchmarks to track their progress, we feel that the belt process parallels other tests, challenges, and goals that students encounter in their lives and as always we give the students tools to meet these challenges with confidence.
BELT STRIPING & TESTING
Every month our classes focus on one life skill and three sections of martial arts curriculum (Flow Forms & Traditional Karate Katas, Freestyle Ground Work, or Freestyle Stand-up Work.) We cover each martial arts section for one week culminating in an assessment the fourth week of the month when the students can earn a stripe on their belt. To be eligible for a belt stripe, students must attend at least 50% of their classes and demonstrate their abilities in the martial movements as well as the life skill of the month.
In order to test for the next belt, students are required to attend a certain number of classes as well as be proficient in the martial arts and life skill curriculum. The average time for beginning and intermediate students is three to four months of training. The amount of time between belts may vary depending upon the student''s attendance, effort and any specific needs of the student. There will also be a longer period of time between belts starting at the green belt level.

SPARRING/SAFETY GEAR
Once students above Pre-K level reach a yellow white stripe belt or higher, they will have the opportunity to practice their moves with partners while using sparring gear. This will allow the student to practice his/her moves at a higher level while maintaining safety. The gear is spread over several belt levels so that students ease their way into the sparring exercises and so that parents are not required to purchase all the gear at one time. At Yellow White Stripe, students begin with the basic protective gear - headgear, gloves and mouthpiece. At Gold White Stripe, the students begin sparring with more contact and so a face shield is required. At Purple, the students begin kickboxing which requires the shin & instep guards and a groin protector for male students.
